What does your car need in summer?

Summer is high season on Öland — and for the cars that make their way here. Every year tens of thousands of vehicles roll across the Öland bridge with holiday expectations, loaded roof boxes and children in the back seat. Many have driven a long way. And some haven’t had the car looked at since spring.

The AC that worked last year may have lost refrigerant. The brakes that survived the winter may be worn after months of salt and grit. And that warning light that came on outside Norrköping — it isn’t going to disappear on its own.

The summer checklist — AC, tyres and a holiday check

Before you set off on a long summer trip — or just want to feel secure day to day — there are things you can check yourself and things we should check for you.

Do it yourself:

• Check the tyre pressures (a loaded car needs higher pressure — see the instructions in the door frame)
• Top up the washer fluid — summer dust and insects take a lot of washing
• Test all the lights, including brake lights and reversing lights
• Check that the warning triangle, hi-vis vest and first aid kit are on board

Let us check:

• The AC system — recharging, leak check and fault-finding
• Brakes — pads, discs and brake fluid
• Cooling system — coolant, hoses and fan
• Tyres — tread depth, wear and balancing
• Battery — summer heat wears on batteries just as cold does
• Clutch and transmission — especially important under heavy load

Summer is our busiest period for AC service. We handle both R134a and R1234yf refrigerant and can diagnose systems that aren’t cooling properly. Working air conditioning isn’t a luxury in July — it’s a safety matter. A tired driver in 30-degree heat makes worse decisions.

We also take motorhomes and caravans. Öland has campsites from Grankullavik in the north to Ottenby in the south, and the motorhomes that come here sometimes need work they hadn’t planned for. We have the space and the competence to handle larger vehicles.

Think of Hasse from Linköping. He has driven the motorhome to Byxelkrok for a week’s holiday. On the second day he notices the AC is only blowing warm air and the brakes are squealing. A holiday shouldn’t be ruined by car trouble. Hasse calls us, and we sort it — often the same day. That’s how it ought to work.

Summer gives us longer days and more light in the workshop. That means we can often take vehicles at short notice, even in the middle of high season.
